Little Egypt

In preparation for Vegas, I've been listening to Elvis all day in the office.

You almost can't HELP but gyrate at your desk !!
And how cute was he???
I mean, really!



"Little Egypt" has always been one of my all time favorite Elvis numbers, and happens to be about a famous Belly Dancer, Fatima, who performed at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 with the "Coochee Coochee Dance" ... 

This video may have an unbelievable "cheese factor" ... but if I could see one show in Vegas with half this much charm, I'd be a happy girl. ;)

Any suggestions for "Non-Viva-Weekend" shows in Vegas?

Lookin' for Love in All the Wrong Places??

I was browsing the web for some good Rockabilly content, and stumbled upon this site of awesomeness: www.rockabillydate.com
And I'll have to admit ... I couldn't resist the urge to explore.

Let's face it ... it can be hard to find someone who has the same interests as us Rockabilly gals. And many of us live in cities with rather small Rockabilly communities, so I can definitely see the appeal of a site that connects Rockabilly singles across the globe.

So I entered the site as a guest, and proceeded to conduct a search. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting ...
But the results were quite interesting, to say the least.

Now, this may not look like the most promising list of prospects. I know, I know.

But then there was this guy, sort of crammed between the "winners" ...

Cute, able to construct a full sentence.
I don't know, maybe worth a try?
(for some other lady, of course ... I'm taken ;) 

So it's not a hopeless cause, I guess. As long as you've got some time on your hands.

I'd be interested to hear how it works for singles really looking to find love with a Rockabilly twist. :)

I Want a Lavender Cadillac

I've been searching for this song on vinyl for AGES, and now I know why I haven't found it!

Because Lavern Baker recorded this song a couple of years before hitting it big ... under her real name, Bea Baker with Maurice King & His Wolverines. Go figure???


Long story short, when I started looking for my very own classic car, this song persuaded me to find a lavender Cadillac, for real.
Come to find out they were way out of my price range at the time. ;)

But at least I've got the song now! The video is a little corny, but the song is phenomenal.  I hope you like Lavern as much as I do! 

Lady Fingers

Yeah, Yeah ... those are good too.

But what I REALLY want to draw your attention to is far cooler than cookies ...


It's called GEL ... and it's the latest craze for your lovely lady fingernails.

All classy Rockabilly ladies should have fiery red nails at all times, yes?? Or at least well manicured pink ones...

But, I'll be the first to admit - I can't make a traditional manicure last for more than 38 minutes. No way, no how.

It's not like I'm a construction worker. I work a 9-5 at the computer, like most folks. But for some reason, getting a traditional manicure is pretty much the equivalent to flushing $20 down the toilet for me.

So, in my attempt to find something that would last to that 39th minute, I branched out and tried the new Gel Manicure a couple of years ago in NY.

Now - I'm a believer!
Wouldn't go back for all the tea in China!

Imagine, a beautiful, shiny manicure that lasts 2 and a half to 3 weeks and is completely dry before you leave the salon!!
No chips. No peeling. No dullness. No breaking.
It's a miracle, as far as I'm concerned.


The process takes just under 1 hour, and involves prepping your nails for 4 coats of gel polish, with 1-2 minutes under a UV or LED lamp between each coat.

 (Apply sunscreen first, just to be safe ;) 

The highlight for me is when I reach into my wallet to pay, and slip on my socks and boots without any fear of messing up my new frills.

2 weeks later I have a tiny bit of "grow-out," but zero chips.
So. Freakin'. Worth it.

They range between $25 and $45 depending on what city you live in, but think of it this way ...

You can pay $10 to $15 every DAY for a "show worthy" traditional manicure.
OR, you can shell out a little more every 2-3 weeks for something with longevity.

My personal favorite is the OPI collection called AXXIUM.

You won't regret it, ladies!

The Salty Dog Chronicles - "Ruby Fizz"

Many years ago, I decided that if I ever had a daughter, I would name her Ruby.
Why, you ask??

My birthstone happens to be Ruby (one of my favorite characteristics of the Leo) ...

Furthermore, one of my favorite songs of all time happens to be "Ruby" by Ray Charles .... such a classic!

And then of course, there is my second favorite signature drink,
The Ruby Fizz ...
(Second only to the Salty Dog.)

As you can see from my Savoy Cocktail book clipping below, the Ruby Fizz is a rather simple, yet ultra classy cocktail. Perfect for a modern Pin-Up.


All you really need is:

2 oz sloe gin
1 tsp grenadine syrup
juice of 1/2 lemons
1 tsp powdered sugar
1 egg white
carbonated water

Shake all of the ingredients, aside from the carbonated water, with ice and strain (into the fancy glass of your choice) over two ice cubes. Fill with carbonated water, stir, and serve. :)

The outcome is a ruby-red, frothy, fresh and fruity concoction with just the right amount of sweetness for a hot summer day.

Get yourself a wrap-around porch and a rocking chair, and you're pretty much the luckiest human being on the planet. Enjoy!!

(I guess my future daughter may think it's rather strange that she was named after an alcoholic beverage ... but she should understand come 21 ;)

To Shake It ... or Not to Shake It

 

That is the question ... ??

Last night I had the pleasure of introducing two girlfriends, who are visiting from Berlin, to the wonderful world of Burlesque here in San Francisco ! 

We went to Club Deluxe, where Little Minsky's puts on a show once a month, featuring girls from all over the US. 

Last night they debuted "Dangerous Curves Ahead, a troupe from Brooklyn that I've seen multiple times on the East Coast. 

Their style is a bit more comedic than most, but their acts are typically hilarious.

Luckily, the Germans thought the performers were a riot! :)
Especially "Scotty the Blue Bunny," a rather tall man who seems to be an SF burlesque staple in a blue lycra bunny suit and 9 inch heels!

Aside from a homeless man passing out on his bar stool (EMS to follow) ... Some much needed laughter ... And the always appreciated "tassel twirling," the girls and I had some interesting conversations.

Their question to me was, 

"Jenny ... why aren't you up there ?" 

And I guess I don't have a really good answer for this ... !!
(Hence this blog post) ..

The truth is, I do know how to shake it - I would LOVE to be up there on stage - And I don't see anything wrong with that ...
Other than the fact that I'm an executive in a corporate environment by day.

So what do you think? Can you have a career by day, and an audience at night? I feel like, if made to choose between the two, I would have to go with the career... obviously.


But do you think it's necessary to choose? In my opinion, this is ART!

Is it wrong to climb the corporate ladder AND be an artist?
I think not.... but I'm sure there are plenty of people with a different opinion. What do you think???

Fancy Nancy Update

I'm back from the Lone Star Round Up!!
And such a great Round Up it was ;)

We braved the heat, partied until 5 am, ate loads of BB-Q and other Texas classics ... and got a bit of bonding time with Nancy.

Unfortunately, Nancy was being a bit temperamental.
She was starting just fine ... but had some "heat" related issues, among other things.


This was probably Lux's face when I called him to tell him. Haha!





She wasn't able to make it out to the Round Up, although, she did make a few appearances at South Congress bars here and there. ;)

Here is Freddy, sweating bullets, trying to coax her out to the Expo center. 



I think she finds herself not quite fancy enough to be called "Fancy Nancy"...

Which is why we've decided it's time for a makeover.
More to come on that soon.

But damn. She sure is a looker, eh? Can't wait to get this baby on the road once and for all!!
